2. Spoilers abound. Read at your own risk.

Episode 18- The Kids Stay in the Picture

“I thought that everything you went through: Prague, Eva, Russell, that maybe you’d changed. But.. who was I kidding?”

Random thoughts

  • Carol’s personality sticks out like a sore thumb in the best way possible.
  • I find it interesting that Serena was so quick to identify an adult Charlie when she hadn’t seen her since she was six.
  • Dan should know better than anyone that these UESers are fluent in subtext.
  • This ending scene with the family photo is cute…except for the fact that it’s missing a certain young fashion designer and dark prince…

Chuck is the worst. On the one hand, he’s upset about maintaining his father’s legacy because he found out that he’d lied to him about what happened in the fire. Then, he turns around and sticks his nose up at Dan, using class as a way to belittle him and prove why he and Blair are incompatible. This is something he’s done since season one, but it’s a lazy comeback to watch now after all he’s been through. I’m sure the dig was more so because Dan was coming between him and Blair, but it’s starting to lose its luster.

Why is Vanessa so adamant on stirring up drama? To be fair, I’m sure Serena would love to know that her on-again-off-again flame and best friend shared a kiss, but what does V gain from spilling the tea?

Episode 19- Petty in Pink

“You don’t know how to be a friend. You shut me out when I called off my divorce to The Captain. There’s not a woman in this room who didn’t take some pleasure in your downfall. Myself included. So enjoy the party, Lily, this will be your last. Oh, and you may want to adjust your dress. Your monitor’s showing.”

-Anne Archibald

Random thoughts

  • If I had to be on house arrest, I could think of worse places to be confined than the VDWs penthouse.
  • I’d believe Raina’s insistence on not talking to Chuck about her mother… if she wasn’t hanging out with his ROOMMATE IN THEIR APARTMENT.
  • The picture chosen for this episode is a perfect representation of how emasculated Rufus has become. That face is all he’s good for nowadays.
  • For someone who’s supposed to be a fish out of water in big, bad NYC, Charlie sure was a quick study in the ways of scheming and creeping. Did we learn nothing from fellow townie Juliet?

I remember that Charlie wasn’t actually who she said she was (although the exact story escapes me at the moment), but since we don’t know that about her yet, I don’t like how quick Serena was to rope her into the world of Gossip Girl.

You almost feel bad for Lily here, but it’s only because she’s the one who’s being shunned. Let’s be real: she’d likely do the same if it were the other way around. In fact, as Anne tells it, she has. Oh, how quickly we develop amnesia when the problem isn’t ours.

Everything that Vanessa has done post-Juliet has done nothing but make a mess, and not in any interesting or entertaining way. Her presence in the show at this point feels unnecessary and real life annoying, not the kind of annoying that makes you want to keep watching.

Episode 20- The Princesses and the Frog

“It’s no surprise she went for a prince. Marie Antoniette was always one of her favorite characters to play. Of course, I was always eating her cake.”

Random thoughts

  • I’m loving Chuck’s five o’clock shadow in this episode! No notes.
  • Rufus is a washed up has been sellout. Now he’s producing a band? I guess he finally found something to do with his life instead of just being a trophy husband, but it kind’ve comes from left field.
  • How ironic is it that Bart was having an affair with Avery Thorpe and Lily was involved with Russell (after Avery’s death, I presume)?
  • LOL at the not-so-subtle plug for Bing in this episode. We all know how successful it turned out to be.

I’m not sure why Serena is so hesitant on supporting Blair and Louis. It can’t all be because she’s still sour about Blair and Dan’s kiss. My guess is that S feels like Chuck is B’s true love, but that’s Blair’s decision to make. At what point do these characters stop taking matters that aren’t even their own into their own hands?

How dare Chuck interfere with Blair’s relationship? I know he’s drunk, but the fact that he continuously sabotages her life at every turn is getting old. Add to that his abuse to Blair in the end of the episode and being determined to keep the truth about Raina’s mother from her and he’s shaping up to become all the things he swore he’d never be.

Random note: the Dutch camera angles that appear when Chuck is in his apartment are spot on and truly accentuate his downward spiral.

Episode 21- Shattered Bass

“You may not be aware of this, but it’s not all light and bright in here. There are some places devoid of even a hint of sparkle.”

Random thoughts

  • Cyrus is back! Yay!
  • Is this the first time that Chuck had ever watched the entire video of the fire?

These characters love taking new people under their wing without doing their due diligence on them. First Juliet, now Charlie? I don’t care if she’s Serena’s “cousin”, she’s too well versed in the gang’s drama for them to be so trusting of her.

It’s evident that Chuck has a drinking problem, and the previous episode shows that he can be quite violent when he’s drunk. How he thought he could pop in the morning after and make things right proves how far gone he is. The fact that this episode tried to put him back in our good graces by exonerating his father from Avery Thorpe’s death leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Episode 22- The Wrong Goodbye

“Just tell me that no one’s trying to stop a wedding, run a ponzi scheme, give anybody fake cancer or turn into a justifiably vengeful townie.”

Random thoughts

  • I don’t know why Russell didn’t think to take Blair’s phone. She was smart to relay her location via a covert phone call to Chuck.
  • You’ve gotta admit, Georgina begging to be a part of a scheme because she’s bored with domestic life is pretty comical.
  • Vanessa had no right to take Dan’s manuscript, much less pitch it to a publishing agency and collect the checks. I’m so sick of her.

Serena swears she needs to be alone every summer, yet she conveniently gets amnesia about that the second she steps foot in the city. Maybe she likes to be a free bird for summer flings and get tied down just in time for cuffing season?

I understand why Raina said what she did before taking her father’s lighter, but her quip as soon as she took it was poorly timed in my opinion. This is a season finale. There should have been more build up. Show how unhinged Russell had become and his willingness to send them all up in flames. Make him not go down without a fight. Talk about anticlimactic.

Another season down! What a whirlwind. We have two more seasons to go, and so much left to uncover. What are you most excited for in season five? Let us know in the comments!
